First Day Back to School!

    Aistear: What is it?

Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years.  The word Aistear is the Irish word for journey and was chosen because early childhood marks the beginning of children’s lifelong learning journeys.

Aistear is a key learning and teaching tool used to implement the primary school curriculum in infant classes.  The children have structured play for an hour twice a week with an emphasis on numeracy and literacy skills, active learning and oral language development.  Usually the children are divided into smaller groups and each group will play at a different “station” in the classroom (for example: role play station, construction station, small world station).  Curriculum subjects covered during Aistear include: S.E.S.E. (Geography, History and Science), S.P.H.E., oral language, reading, writing, maths, art, music and drama.

    Aistear: The home

Aistear is all about the early childhood framework being integrated in the classroom. Each month we have a new theme in September our theme in Aistear was the home. The junior room did lots of lovely activities about the home such as building and designing their own homes. They also went into role pretending to be in their own homes and doing different activites. We also did lots of work on our fine motor skills such as cutting and sticking, playdough work and peg boards.

    STEM activities

This month in the junior room we had great fun designing and making our own newspaper hats in small groups. While at times it was tricky to start with each group was successful in making their own unique designs and had great fun too!

    Special delivery: Eggs have arrived!

This month we had a very special and exciting delivery to Ballyfacey 6 eggs from Nore Valley farm in Kilkenny. Brian kindly paid a visit to the junior room and there was great excitement all round! We learnt that it will take three weeks for our eggs to hatch and chicks to come out. He also showed us how to look after and care for the eggs and chicks. They should be hatching any day now and we are keeping a close eye on them each week!

Learning to be safe and seen on the road!

At the end of September we had a really interesting visit from Fiona who works for the RSA. She spoke to us all about how we can all be more careful crossing the road and how to be seen when out cycling. She did lots of lovely work with us from songs to stories. We even got some free rulers and lights to put on our bikes!

    October

    Aistear: Health

This month in Aistear we looked at the topic of the doctors surgery and the opticians. We were busy giving eye tests, making doctors bags, making x-rays, designing glasses and also building hospitals and haunted houses for Halloween!

    Halloween chocolate apples!

1st class have begun looking at the genre of procedural writing this month and what better way to start it then making some yummy chocolate apples for Halloween! We really enjoyed making and eating them.

    STEM Activity: Mud huts

This month the junior room worked in groups making a STEM activity on mud huts. The groups designed and made their on unique mud huts using limited materials. We think they turned out pretty good!

    Halloween Party

    Happy Halloween!!!
    Scarily spooky!!

    Perfect Penguins!!

We learnt all about about Penguins in the month of November with 1st class writing really interesting reports about penguins that they made into booklets. Here is a picture of our lovely art work!

    Christmas Festivities

    Aistear: Building site

In the month of January we learnt all about different types of homes and buildings in lots of our subjects. The children really enjoyed making different sorts of homes in Aistear such as bungalows, terraced houses and even apartment blocks!

    3D Shapes everywhere!

In all three classes in the month of January we had great fun working together to identify and sort 3D shapes. We found out that 3D shapes are all around us even in our school yard and building.

    Three little pigs new home

We had the challenge in January of building a new home for the three little pigs one that the wolf couldn’t blow down. We had to use spaghetti and marshmallows as a group to make homes that could stay standing up. It was tricky but we had lots of fun making them. We may have even sneaked a marshmallow each to eat!

    Aistear: The garden centre

This month in Aistear as we begin to prepare for spring time we are going to be looking at the garden centre and the new life and flowers we see coming into spring.
