Sound experiment
We have been learning about sound and how it travels in waves during our SESE lessons. We conducted an experiment where we made a megaphone/ear trumpet out of card. Our experiment showed that our voices were amplified using the megaphone while we could hear our friend’s voices a lot clearer when using the ear trumpet.
St. Brigid’s Day 2023
We celebrated St. Brigid’s Day by making St. Brigid’s crosses. These are made using rushes which the children collected.

STEM projects for our Middle Room for Science Week 2021.
Welcome to 2nd, 3rd and 4th class 2019-2020!
Time Capsule
We created a time capsule that isn’t to be opened until September 2021, when we will be in 4th, 5th and 6th class! We put in a factfile about each member of our class, our handprints, a photo of our class, a front page of a newspaper and many more things. We can’t wait to open it and see how much we have changed!
Bridges
For Science, we have been learning about bridges and the many different types of bridges. We worked in pairs to investigate the best way to create a solid and sturdy bridge, using only two sheets of A4 paper. After much experimenting, we found out that the best bridge consisted of a raised side and an arch underneath.
Nests
For Science, we investigated how to make a suitable nest for a bird or a chicken. We were inspired by the chickens which we hatched from eggs, provided to us by Nore Valley Farm as part of their incubation project.
Michael Moylan’s visit
Heritage expert, Michael Moylan, came to talk to us and educate us on The Vikings, in a fun and hands-on way. We really enjoyed trying on the replica armour and clothes and trying out the replica (and safe!) weapons of The Vikings era.
Chickens!
Nore Valley Farm provided us with some eggs and an incubator in order to hatch our own chickens! It took around 2 weeks for them to hatch and 3 out of the 7 eggs hatched. We looked after the chickens in a chicken coop for 10 days and then they were brought back to Nore Valley Farm to live and play with all of their other chicken friends! Our class named the brown chick, Cheeky Tweety, and he certainly lived up to his name!
Halloween
For Halloween we dressed up in a wide variety of weird and wonderful costumes! Later on that day, we took part in some traditional Halloween games such as snap apple, bobbing for apples and the fortune telling game. We really enjoyed it!
The Elf on the Shelf
There was great excitement when our class Elf on the Shelf, Jellybean, returned at the beginning of December to keep an eye on us and also to entertain us with his antics. We look forward to seeing what mischief he gets up to over the next few weeks!
Weaving
For art, we used two contrasting colours in order to create a patterned weave. This activity took a lot of concentration but we were all very proud of the finished product.
Code breaking
In Science, we learned about the famous code breaker, Alan Turing, who invented the modern computer and whose code breaking skills were instrumental to the Allied victory in World War 2. We were inspired to create our own code breaking instrument, which was based on the Caesar cipher code, and had fun creating secret messages for our friends to crack!
Self Portraits
We used mirrors and step-by-step instructions to create our own self portraits!
World Book Day
We enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book characters on World Book Day, which was on Thursday, the 5th of March this year. We took part in lots of book-themed activities on the day and even made our own, personalised corner bookmarks!
